Wedding Wednesday: How We Met

I’m kicking off my new “Wedding Wednesday” series by sharing the story of how it all began! As my freshman year of college was coming to a close I was looking for a summer job. It seemed like I had one secured at a place that my friend worked, but the job ended up falling through a few days before I was scheduled to come home. Another friend of mine was working at the Under Armour outlet and suggested that I apply since they were still looking for people to work for the summer. I got the job and this where my love story with Dan begins.

I still remember the first time I worked with Dan. He was extremely friendly (and chatty) and his high school friend came in with his little cousin on his shoulders and Dan introduced me to him. I, of course, ended up getting in trouble for talking while Dan just kept chatting with his friend (I was very annoyed that I got yelled at and he did not haha). It wasn’t love at first sight or anything like that. He was just another kid that I worked with.

At the end of June he invited my friend and I to his house for a party. It was right after my birthday and I was going down to Virginia the next day to visit my friend from college for a few days. I said “yea, we’ll go.” Of course, later that night, my friend and I decided not to go because a) we barely knew him and b) I had to pack and my train was leaving at 7am for D.C. He wouldn’t even realize we weren’t there. When I came back from D.C. I worked the afternoon shift that Friday. Dan came in to pick up his paycheck and we made small talk about our plans for the weekend and then he asked me why I didn’t come to his party on Monday night. I told him why and proceeded to invite him to come watch fireworks with my friends and I because I felt bad that I didn’t go to his party and I knew he would say no because he already told me he was going to a party (it was a pity invite). Well, to my surprise he said yes and I was not too thrilled haha.

We went and watched fireworks with my friends and went our separate ways. I went back to my friend’s house and Dan would not stop texting me. I truly didn’t think anything of it because I just figured he wanted to “get in my pants” (those were the exact words I told my friends haha).

Fast forward a week or two and we found ourselves hanging out at one of my friend’s birthday parties (the one who got me the job at Under Armour). There were some girls from high school there and one seemed really interested in Dan’s friend. Later that week she texted me and was asking me all of these questions about Dan. I immediately called my friend from college and updated her on my life and she stopped me mid-sentence and was like “Angela, you like this guy.” Of course I was like “ummm, no. Totally not my type.” But the more I thought about it the more I realized she was right. Why else would I be getting defensive about a guy when another girl was asking about him?

I went and hung out with Dan, his friend, and that girl from high school later that night, and Dan and I made plans to hang out on our own. Pretty soon we had a summer fling going. We were talking all day every day and were hanging out frequently since we worked together and lived just 3 miles from each other.

When the calendar hit August, I started to wonder what was going to happen when I went back to school. I went on vacation, then he went on vacation, and by the time he came back we only had about a week left before I had to head back down to Virginia to start my sophomore year of college. I remember walking into his house and giving myself a pep talk because I was about to do something I never thought I would do. I needed to know if this was just a summer fling to him or if he wanted to try something more. When I finally got up the courage to say something I was surprised when he said we could give it a try (I basically asked if he was my boyfriend or not haha). And as they say, the rest is history!

Dan and I have been together for seven years, three of them long distance. It hasn’t always been easy but it’s been worth it, and I was so happy when he (finally) asked me to marry him earlier this summer. I knew if we could make it through those three years when I was in Virginia that we could make it through anything. I can’t imagine getting to do life with anyone else!
